Early Dance Description Separator Symbols

This directory contains images of the symbols used in many early (18th, 19th centuries) dance descriptions. So far, I haven't found any clear definitions of these symbols, and many of the collections use them in an apparently inconsistent manner.

In the ABC transcription here, I've used ASCII symbols that look like these, but rotated by 90% anti-clockwise. E.g., I've used ":|." for the symbol consisting of a horizontal line with two dots above and one dot below. This gives a similar appearance and works in plain text. You may copy these symbols and use them in your web pages if you like. You can also find similar images on a lot of early-dance sites, which is where I found and collected these GIF images.
