Gray's "Twenty four Country Dances (for the Year 1812)", as transcribed by John Chambers in August 2014. Photos of the original booklet, with transcriptions to modern staff notation, were found at: http://www.eatmt.org.uk/gray_1812.htm # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # The tunes in this collection aren't themselves numbered. The fie names are of the form PPN_Title.abc, where PP is the page number and N is the tune number on the page (1 or 2). Additional fields have been added to the file names giving the key, number of bars, and number of staff lines. # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # The dance phrasing seems to be partly indicated by use of "." and ":"; the latter apparently used for the midpoint of the dance. But these are also used to mark abbreviations, so they're not very useful information. # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # Most of the titles are capitalized. I've used the approach of putting initial articles (a, an, the) in lower-case, to make things easier for software that ignores initial lower-case words. In the combined "alltunes" file, the first letters in titles are capitalized, for the benefit of those who prefer titles that way. The occasional use of lower-case words in titles doesn't make much sense, and is probably not useful. # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # A few tunes have initials or a name at the upper right. These have been put in a C: (Composer) line in the ABC, though it's not actually known whether these referred to the composer or a source. # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
